SOUTHS Logan Magpies coach Josh Hannay says he is confident his side can turn things around before this year’s Intrust Super Cup season.
The Magpies were thumped 50-0 by the Brisbane Broncos in a trial game at last weekend.
But Hannay said he believed his side would handle the occasion better in round one of the upcoming Intrust Super Cup next Sunday against the PNG Hunters.
“We didn’t put our best foot forward. I don’t think we expected to get close but we just didn’t play well,” the former Queensland Maroons centre said.
“We just got a bit excited at playing against a Broncos team of this calibre and we made some uncharacteristic mistakes — we gave away three penalties while we had the ball.
“I’m feeling very good about our pre-season because outside of (last) weekend, we’ve played well.
“I think we’re capable of beating PNG in round one if we play near what we’re capable of.
“We can go into the season feeling like we’re capable of beating anyone if we play how we’re capable of.”
Magpies-aligned Broncos Caleb Timu, Joe Boyce, Sam Scarlett and Jamayne Isaako put in strong performances against the Magpies on Saturday night.
“We as coaching staff were taking a fair bit of notice of what our guys who lined up for the Broncos were doing,” Hannay said.
“I thought they all played well — Caleb got a hat-trick, Joe was one of the best forwards on the field, Sam showed some classy touches in the halves and ran the team well and Jamayne got on the scoresheet with a try.”
