A young man who was discovered carrying a loaded, sawn-off rifle through the streets of Logan was sentenced to prison at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday.
Lealofioamoa Jordan Siale, 23, was struggling with a significant methamphetamine addiction when he went on a four month crime spree, racking up 20 charges between February and July, 2020.
The offences included unlawful use of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, failure to properly dispose of syringes, possession of knuckle dusters and possession of a shortened firearm in public.
Siale pleaded guilty to all charges.
According to police prosecutor sergeant Sharon Mauritz, Siale was found in possession of dangerous drugs on four occasions between March 23 and July 6.
He was twice apprehended in the use of a stolen vehicle, first on March 23 when he drove a person to work and then on July 1, when he was discovered in the passenger seat.
The most serious of the offending occurred on July 6, however, when police officers were alerted to a man knocking on the door of a Logan home.
The man was Siale, and the occupants told police they’d seen him in possession of a backpack.
Siale had dumped the backpack nearby and police found it shortly thereafter, with a rifle inside.
“The rifle had been shortened considerably, a magazine attached and four rounds of ammunition were inside the magazine,” said the Magistrate as she sentenced Siale.
“It’s very concerning that you’re out and about in public with that, such that the parliament has seen fit to express its concern about that type of conduct by imposing a mandatory minimum sentence for that offence, which is 12 months imprisonment, to be served.”
Siale has been on remand since his arrest on July 6 and has served 340 days of presentence custody.
The court heard Siale had been addicted to ice since he was just 16-years-old, but managed to “dry out” during his prison stay.
He was given a head sentence of 15 months imprisonment with a parole release date of July 5, 2021.
