The son of an infamous convicted murderer who yelled “I am the murder express” after an unprovoked killing of a grandfather, has faced court for his own shocking attacks on his partner and family.

Paul John Conoley was jailed for life in February for the brutal, unprovoked murder of an anonymous grandfather on a Logan street in 2019.

The 44-year-old Woodridge homeless man set upon Steven Church, a beloved grandfather of five, while high on drugs, stomped and killed him and tried to hide his body in a bin.

Neighbours saw the entire ordeal and he was arrested by police, disturbingly yelling “I am the murder express” and “no guts, no glory”.

Conoley’s son Jordan Thomas Charlie Conoley told Beenleigh Magistrates Court on September 5, that his father’s high profile murder conviction affected his life and was the cause of his own criminal activity.

The 20-year-old Beenleigh bricklayer pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm, stealing and three counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence.

The court heard that on October 11, 2022 Conoley sprayed paint from a pressurised can into his sister’s eyes and bit his sister and mother’s hands.

He also punched his partner at the time in the head.

The victims suffered bruising and cuts from the bites and punches.

In February, Conoley ransacked a shopping centre with co-accused, while masked and armed with a hammer, and stole almost $3000 in watches from a store.

Defence lawyer Nicole Conlan said Conoley’s behaviour was influenced by his father’s murder trial in February last year.

“The catalyst for his decline was the significant stress he was going through during his father’s high profile trial for murder, where he was sentenced to life in prison,” she said.

Magistrate Ron Kilner said the use of a spray paint can was extremely dangerous.

“That is the most abhorrent thing I could imagine, you could have blinded that person and caused blindness. I can’t think of anything worse,” he said.

“These domestic violence offences are extremely serious and I have to impose imprisonment.

“If you come back for these sort of offences again it will be much worse for you.

“Take the opportunity that has been afforded.”

Conoley was sentenced to 55 days in prison, declared as time served. He was placed on a probation order for 18 months.
