A Woolloongabba restaurant owner and his wife have both copped hefty fines after making false declarations and causing “significant delays” with a police investigation.

John Michael Daniels, 34, and his wife Bruna Mayumi Nishizawa, 30, both pleaded guilty to making false declarations in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The court heard the pair made false declarations that they did not know an offender in a police investigation on May 15, 2021.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jodie Tahana said the false statements made by the couple resulted in a “significant delay” in the police investigation and bringing the offender in question before the courts.

The court heard Daniels had a lengthy criminal history which includes serious offences that received lengthy imprisonment while Nishizawa only had one entry on her criminal history.

Their lawyer told the court Daniels moved from the Philippines to Australia in 2001 and he now runs a cleaning business and a restaurant in Woolloongabba.

“In relation to my client’s criminal history I’m told it was time where he was struggling financially,” the lawyer said.

“He was socialising with the wrong circles and unfortunately had a dependency upon methamphetamine.

“He has been clean since his release from custody in 2015.”

The pair were both ordered to pay a $1000 fine and no conviction was recorded for Nishizawa.
