While high on cocaine and driving more than 150kmh, a husband recklessly crashed his car into an Eagleby home with his wife alongside him, destroying the property and then fighting four police officers while being tasered.

The 37-year-old Doollandella man, Jeremy William Barnes, was jailed when he faced Beenleigh Magistrates Court on December 8, 2022.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle, deprivation of liberty and obstructing police officers.

The court heard that on October 2, 2022 Barnes was at his home, high on cocaine and made frightening remarks to his wife.

“I am about to become the divine masculine and unlock the final stages of awakening,” he said.

Barnes then forced his wife to get into the car as he drove erratically and dangerously around the Logan area, travelling at more than 150 kmh.

His wife was begging and screaming for him to slow down but he ignored her and instead said he was going to activate his superpowers and said “let’s fly”.

He also told the terrified passenger “we are never going to go home again”.

Barnes then counted down from ten until he lost control, hit a bend and crashed into an elderly couple’s home in Eagleby.

The court heard Police arrived at the scene and Barnes aggressively confronted them.

He was set upon by the Police dog and pushed it away before being tased multiple times and physically restrained on the ground by four officers.

In a victim impact statement tendered to the court, Barnes’ wife said she thought she was going to die in that car.

“We were going faster and faster. I was begging and screaming, telling him to stop,” she said.

“I thought I was going to die. The last thing I saw was a crash and then I woke up, stunned, realising I was still alive.”

The damage to the property was estimated at $26,000 but Magistrate Terry Duroux expected that figure to increase significantly.

Occupants of the home were not injured.

The elderly male resident had however just recovered from heart surgery and said in a victim impact statement to the court what a terrible situation the crash created.

“Will we ever get our lives back on track? We don’t know,” he said.

Barnes’ defence lawyer said his client had no criminal history and that the accident was more reckless than deliberate.

Magistrate Terry Duroux sentenced him to two years in prison with a parole release date of April 1, 2023. Barnes had served 67 days of pre-sentence custody.

His driving license was also disqualified for three years.
