A strange scenario involving a missing wedding ring, bag of golf clubs and an insurance company payout has played out in court.

Jennifer Jane Hall, 47, was paid out $15,000 by insurance company NRMA on October 17, 2021 after reporting several lost items.

Beenleigh District Court heard on January 19, 2024 that Regents Park woman Hall’s home was broken into in 2018.

Three years later she claimed her partner Jay Robinson stole her engagement ring when in actual fact he had pawned it to a pawnbroker.

Her claim in total was valued at $81,000, heard the court.

Her partner also had possession of two bracelets and the golf club bag but Hall still claimed with NRMA that the items were missing.

Police arrived at Hall’s home on October 15, 2022 and asked to see her mobile phone but she refused to give them the pass code.

She told the court she thought the officers were going after her partner and she panicked in refusing them access.

Hall pleaded guilty to contravening an order about information stored electronically and fraud.

Her partner Robinson pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on June 8, 2023, for pawning the engagement ring.

He was not charged in relation to the insurance fraud.

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy sentenced him to a fine of $500 and he was ordered to pay $1500 in compensation.

Hall represented herself in court on January 19, had no criminal history and said she did not plan defraud NRMA.

“It was never my intention to take advantage of them, I was a loyal customer,” she said.

“I never tried to get money off them fraudulently.

“When police arrived at my home my anxiety got the better of me and I just shut down so I didn’t provide the access code.

“It was traumatic, I thought they were looking for evidence to do with my partner’s criminal behaviour.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Hall’s offending was not as serious as examples where a person deliberately misleads a company for financial gain.

“You still however failed to tell authorities and received money as a result of the claim,” he said.

“There is a question as to whether I record a conviction but I believe it is necessary to do so.”

Hall was Sentenced to a 12 month probation order and a conviction was recorded.

She was also ordered to pay NRMA $15,000 in compensation.
