The 20-year-old father of a four-month-old who stole fuel and drove in stolen vehicles on multiple occasions last year will have a possible nine-month prison sentence hanging over his head should he reoffend in a similar manner again.

“Pretty motivated” by the “huge” responsibility of being the “sole carer” for his four-month-old son, Jayden Lawrence Clark-Shields, 20, today pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle, one count of failing to comply with requirement to stop private vehicle and one count of stealing.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard Beenleigh man Clark-Shields was a passenger in a stolen vehicle in January, was caught on CCTV stealing fuel while driving a stolen vehicle in September and had left a fingerprint on the driver’s side door of another stolen vehicle.

The defendant was only two months into a suspended sentence for another matter at the time, but had no previous similar offending on his two-page criminal history.

The defence submitted that Clark-Shields had sought comprehensive assistance from counsellors and medical professionals to kerb his offending while he tends to his son.

Unemployed but with aspirations of working as a mechanic, Clark-Shields was diagnosed with ADHD and autism and had a “huge response” to the birth of his son, the court heard.

Magistrate Louise Shephard acknowledged the man’s turnaround of late but warned him that his offending was “serious” and could invite dire consequences.

He was further ordered to repay $28 with convictions recorded.
