A Logan man’s alleged brazen arson attack in broad daylight has been revealed in court as he applied for bail.

Kingston’s Jason Benjamin Hardie, 36, applied for bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday, July 3, for two counts of arson of a vehicle or home.

The court heard the alleged offences occurred in the afternoon of January 20 this year.

Police prosecutor Harry Coburn opposed bail and said the prosecution’s case was strong.

“It is a strong case and the defendant Hardie returned to the crime scene an hour later in the same car,” he said.

The court heard the alleged co-accused had burns to their body as a result of the fire, but police were still waiting for the alleged victim’s statement and DNA evidence.

Mr Coburn argued implementing a curfew as part of a bail condition would not help as the alleged offences were committed in broad daylight.

Hardie had already served five months of pre-sentence custody.

Defence lawyer Sarah Pascoe said the witnesses had conflicting descriptions of Hardie.

“One witness described him as having dirty blonde hair, another as having short hair, but my client has a beard with a shaved head,’’ she said.

“There are significant issues in terms of identification and we have no evidence linking him to the scene.”

The court heard Hardie had a lengthy NSW criminal history including property and vehicles offences.

Hardie was presently on parole from NSW but planned to move to Rockhampton.

Magistrate Gary Finger refused bail and listed the matter for mention on July 22.
