Jamie Roberts: Eagleby ice addict jailed for 49 drug-fuelled offences

A Logan woman has been jailed for 49 offences, including being found with 4.1g of ice and leading police on an outrageous chase.

The surprising history of meth

A 27-year-old Logan ice addict sobbed for the duration of her sentence in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday as she was jailed for 49 outrageous offences.

Eagleby woman Jaime Lee Roberts was supported by her mother in court as Magistrate Brian Kilmartin decided the 79 days she had already spent in custody was not enough to deter her from offending in the future.

“She is hopelessly infested by drugs,” Mr Kilmartin told the court.

“She has no comprehension of the problems she’s placed herself in.”

The court heard the offences were committed between October 6, 2019, just five days after she was sentenced to 18 months’ probation for further drug offences, and her arrest in September.

The most serious charges, in the opinion of Mr Kilmartin and police prosecutor Zoe Melksham, were being found in possession of 4.1g of ice and, on August 1, leading police on a 25-minute chase at Riverview and elsewhere.

The court heard Roberts was high on ice and amphetamines at the time and travelled at speeds of up to 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.

She smashed through police vehicles when they boxed her in, drove on her rims after a stinger device was deployed successfully, and only stopped when her crippled vehicle could go no further.

Ms Melksham told the court Roberts then refused to get out of the vehicle, making police “pull her out of the vehicle and fighting them every step of the way”.

Despite being handed an immediate suspension, Roberts was discovered behind the wheel again just days later.

All in all, Roberts was sentenced for: shoplifting, multiple drug possessions, multiple utensil possessions, multiple offences of driving unregistered, uninsured, and unlicensed, receiving tainted property, dangerous operation of vehicle, displaying false plates, fraud, evading police, obstructing police, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Defence lawyer Raquel Brehmer told the court her client was a “model citizen” who worked jobs including Plus Fitness Underwood.

However, her partner cheated on her with her best friend while Roberts was visiting her dying father in Western Australia and she began spiralling into the grips of addiction.

Mr Kilmartin sentenced her to 18 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole.

She was also sentenced to 18 months’ probation and fined $500.
