An off-duty police officer was struck by a mechanic in Logan driving 20km/h over the speed limit while high on cannabis, leaving the cop with severe injuries and the driver behind bars.

Jake William Easey, 29, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on February 24 to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm, disobeying the speed limit and driving while a relevant drug was present in his system.

The court heard that on July 15, 2021 the motorcyclist exited off the Pacific Motorway in Shailer Park at 6pm in the far right lane.

The street turned into an 80km/h and then 60km/h speed zone.

Easey was travelling at 80km/h in the 60km/h zone behind the motorcyclist and struck him with his ute.

The off duty senior constable became entangled in his motorcycle and pushed along the road, causing severe injuries.

The court heard the motorcyclist suffered lacerations to the forehead, abrasions, fractured ribs and pain in his knee.

His left ankle was fractured and he told the court it swelled every day, it hurt to walk and he had constant lower leg and knee pain.

When Easey got out of his car he said to the injured motorcyclist “sorry mate I didn’t see you” and the incident was captured on dashcam footage from another driver nearby.

The court heard when Easey was asked by Police who was responsible for the crash he said “obviously me, I rear-ended him”.

He also told police when interviewed that he looked down, looked up and saw the motorbike’s tail lights but not the brake lights.

Easey said to police cannabis was in his system after smoking it the night before the crash.

The court heard he was a father of one, lived in Carina and had been working steadily as a mechanic since leaving the hospitality industry.

Judge Terry Gardiner KC said Easey had a poor traffic history.

“You’ve been given numerous opportunities by the court previously,” he said.

He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with a parole release date of June 23, 2023.

Easey was also disqualified from driving for two years and three months.
