A 29-year-old bitumen sealer from Slacks Creek is now undergoing anger management after viciously bashing an unconscious man as he lay motionless on the ground.

Jackson John Paulger, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday to eight charges including assaults occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage.

The court heard Paulger bashed a man unconscious after being sacked from his job in Verrierdale on November 27, 2019

Police prosecutor Sgt Donna Kay said witnesses saw Paulger strike the man with a closed fist to his head causing him to lose consciousness and “he continued to stomp, punch and kick the man while he lay motionless on the ground”.

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll said the victim had to be taken to hospital for his injuries.

“It’s lucky the person didn’t die,” he said.

“Punches to the head can kill … one punch can kill.”

The court heard the following day, Paulger threw a glass bottle through the window of Hungry Jacks over an issue about paying 50 cents for extra chocolate fudge in Logan Central on November 28, 2019.

“I don’t think you were thinking very clearly in relation to your conduct,” Mr O’Driscoll said.

Paulger’s lawyer told the court the offences were committed during a time when his mental health was “out of control” and he has since undertaken counselling for anger management

He said the circumstances around the offending was that Paulger had just been terminated from his job and he had issues with the victim and “inappropriately continued to injure” him.

He said Paulger was now a rehabilitated member of society and currently working for a local bitumen company as a site supervisor.

Paulger was sentenced to a head sentence of two years imprisonment with an immediate parole release date.

He was also ordered to pay $1000 in compensation to the assault victim and $1,111 in restitution to the affected business.
