A number of iconic grain silos at a large stock feed depot will make way for the southside’s newest private hospital.

Australian Unity, a mutual company with interests in healthcare, insurance and banking, bought the former Riverina (Australia) site at Meadowbrook and unveiled plans to build a $150 million hospital and health hub.

Plans by Design Worldwide Partnership include 90 inpatient beds, nine operating theatres, 60 specialist consulting suites, an onsite pathology laboratory and diagnostic imaging centre.

The new hospital will be opposite the Logan Hospital and within walking distance to the Loganlea train station and a bus station.

In September, the State Assessment and Referral Agency requested further information on how the project would affect the railway corridor and public and passenger transport networks.

The site borders the train line at Loganlea train station, which has been earmarked to be moved 300m east closer to the front to the Logan Hospital.

Before the hospital can be built, Logan City Council will have to amend its planning scheme to allow the site to include short-term accommodation and a hotel along with a childcare centre and a food and drink outlet.

The plans are expected to go out for public consultation early next year after a public notification period recommences on February 1 and after the state has assessed the information about the transport links.

Logan City Council prepared a masterplan for Meadowbrook in 2016 which included guidelines for a health, education and wellbeing hub and supported the demolition of the existing Riverina animal stockfeed mill.

The site covers 1.624 hectares, which includes a park, basement parking, a walkway and cycle connections.

The new building will have a maximum height of nine storeys to a maximum of 40m and create an “H” shape design layout.

Stage 2 is not included and ground floor open carparking will be provided until redeveloped.
