Griffith Uni’s new power team brings world-class tech skills

Griffith University has taken a major step towards staking a claim as one of the world’s leading educators in technology and data with a range of new appointments and changes at the top.

Griffith University and its Logan campus have taken major steps towards staking a claim as one of the country’s leading educators in technology and data with a range of new appointments and changes at the top.

After more than three years at the helm, much-loved Pro-Vice Chancellor at Logan campus Linda O’Brien will retire this month.

Professor Cindy Shannon will assume the role of Head of Logan campus, in addition to the role as Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous.

Professor Shannon worked closely with Ms O’Brien and the Logan community since she arrived on campus this year.

She will continue to deepen relationships with the Logan community and build on the strengths of the campus which is playing a major role in medical science, hospitality and vocational education.

Professor Liz Burd, who is currently Pro Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University, will take up the role of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) in February after Professor Debra Henly retires.

Professor Burd has also held the positions of Dean of Undergraduate Education at Durham University in the UK, where she led a 20-strong research team.

She has also held prestigious posts such as director of the UK’s Centre for Excellence: Active Learning in Computing and has been an active volunteer for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers serving on its education board for five years and as a director.

Her love of computer science and technology was strengthened when she served on the board of governors of the Computer Society for five years.

As a software engineer, Professor Burd’s research has led to many industry collaborations including IBM, Microsoft, British Telecommunication, BAe, and Logica.

She has received more than $15 million to support her research and has published more than 60 articles on software engineering and 30 on computing education.
