A Logan man has been sentenced after choking his partner in a brutal attack after a fight over who should go collect their drugs.

Gleneagle’s Thomas Terance Newman, 30, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Monday, December 5, to two counts of choking, suffocation, strangulation in a domestic relationship and one count of breaching bail conditions.

The court heard Newman choked his ex-partner on two separate occasions between October 25 and November 16 last year.

“The pair were driving home from the Gold Coast when they stopped at a set of lights,” the police prosecutor said.

“He placed his hand over her mouth and slapped her face.

“She could not breathe or yell for help.

“Her vision blurred.

“The complainant had difficulties swallowing and speaking.”

On the second occasion, Newman and his ex-partner were arguing about whose car would be used to pick-up drugs from Beaudesert.

“He became angry, blaming her for not being on time and getting the drugs,” the police prosecutor said.

“He told her to shut up and stop acting like a d**k head.

“He grabbed her against the throat, shoving her up against a wall.

“He grabbed her hair and pressed and smashed her face into the tiles four times.

“He then grabbed her by the throat and squeezed.

“He continued to choke her, eventually he let go and left the house.

“She was taken to Logan hospital where she had difficulty breathing, swallowing and suffered bruising.”

Newman’s lawyer, James McNab, said his client had a bright future.

“It was a toxic relationship and that was somewhat alluded to in the facts,” Mr McNab said.

“He has a good relationship with all his family members.

“When he is released he wants to start his own scrap metal company.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said the offence were concerning.

“Choking is the most serious offence,” Mr Chowdhury said.

“It’s a precursor to more serious violence, including murder.

“Don’t strike her, don’t punch her, certainly don’t choke her.

“Do anything else you can to divert your anger.”

Newman received a head sentence of three years’ jail.

His 334 days spent in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served.

He was granted immediate parole.

Convictions were recorded.
