AUSTRALIAN athlete Genevieve LaCaze hopes to use an impressive showing at the Rio Olympics as a springboard to break the Australian 3000m steeplechase record.
That is the word from the 27-year-old former John Paul College student’s brother, Elliott, after LaCaze made her first Olympic final this week, finishing ninth overall and running a personal best time of 9:21.21.
The national record is currently held by Donna MacFarlane with a time of 9:18.35 in 2008.
“(The final) was fantastic — everyone was so excited with how she went,” Mr LaCaze said.
“I’ve spoken to dad and Gen and they’re absolutely elated.
“She was really happy to do a PB in the final — it was all she could ask for to happen.
“She wants the Australian record within the next few months — that’s her next goal.
“(Fellow Australian steeplechase athlete) Madeline Hills and Gen have got a friendly, competitive rivalry going now and I think they’re pushing each other to be better.”
LaCaze is due to compete in the 5km run on Tuesday night and Mr LaCaze said his sister would use the confidence of her steeplechase result to boost her.
“She’s already achieved what she wanted to at the Olympics by getting to the steeplechase final,” he said.
“I think she’ll look to use the high of the steeplechase to boost her in the 5km.”
Mr LaCaze said he was “extremely proud” of his sister and the way she had handled herself in Brazil.
The 5km heat is at 10.55pm AEST.
