A Logan father has been jailed after strangling and assaulting his daughter during a drunken fight witnessed by their neighbours.

Gavin Callum Wood, 57, of Rochedale South, pleaded guilty in district court at Beenleigh on Tuesday to three domestic violence offences: two counts of strangulation and one count of common assault.

The court heard Wood got into a violent altercation with his 19-year-old daughter after he had been drinking up late at their home in Rochedale South on July 22, 2020.

The argument broke out after his daughter asked him to keep the noise down so she could sleep while Wood was drinking and listening to music.

After the pair exchanged heated words, Wood pushed his way into her bedroom and she told him to leave and pushed him away.

The court heard Woof then struck her in the jaw with his fist, grabbed her by her arms, pushed her onto the bed and put his hands around her throat for about 15 seconds.

The teen’s mother attempted to pull him off and she managed to get to the front door.

The court heard Wood chased his daughter to the front door and grabbed her around the neck again.

She then ran to the back gate screaming for help and Wood approached her with a chair in his hands swearing and threatening to “put her in her place”.

This was all heard by a neighbour who called an emergency number and police attended.

Wood’s lawyer said her client was remorseful for his actions and presented character references that described him as a genuinely “helpful and good man” when he’s not on alcohol.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Wood had a dated but relevant criminal history for violent offending.

“You’re very lucky you didn’t cause any more serious injury to your daughter,” he said.

He sentenced him to two and a half years imprisonment with a release parole date on July 31, 2022.
