LOGAN CITY will pay its last respects to the city’s longest serving Mayor, Rod Golledge, who died aged 81 this month.
His funeral will be held today at the Good Shepherd Chapel, Trinder Park Rest Home, Woodridge starting at 11am.
Hundreds are expected to attend and many will pay their respects after his family extended an invitation to those who knew him to speak at the service.
Councillor Golledge served as mayor from 1991-2000 and helped forge a strong identity for the relatively new city through a series of social and economic innovations.
Among the highlights of his three terms were extensions to the Council Administration Centre, major infrastructure developments and sister city agreements with Asia.
He also introduced the first city pride initiative, played a key role in securing the Logan Campus of Griffith University and guided council’s transition from a small local authority to a major regional centre.
The city’s cultural and sporting significance was enhanced with the opening of the Logan Art Gallery, the restoration of Mayes Cottage and a new indoor sports centre at Cornubia. His tremendous contribution was recognised in 2013 with the naming of a new road in Berrinba, the Rod Golledge Drive.
Logan mayor Luke Smith led tributes earlier this week.
“Rod leaves behind a tremendous legacy and the gratitude of a city that grew so much under his leadership,” Cr Smith said.
“He transformed Logan from a new city still finding its way to an established city the equal of any in Queensland.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family at this time.”
