THE state government has stepped up measures to keep people at home this Easter long weekend and has closed more national parks and waterholes.

Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch said the tough restrictions did not apply to local residents who lived next door to a national park and could walk there.

The tough measures also include all barbecue facilities in all day-use and camping areas and all state visitor centres and wildlife centres.

The measures will affect Moreton Island, Fraser Island and North and South Stradbroke Islands.

In Logan, residents who can walk to the Daisy Hill National Park will be allowed access but people will be fined if they drive to the area.

Parks in and around Tamborine and Tamborine Mountain Waterfalls will also be off limits.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said police would be patrolling the state’s roads for speedsters and those breaching the COVID-19 rules and going outside of the home for non-essential business.

More than 157 people have been fined for ignoring the non-essential movement restrictions over the past week.

“I think that the message is very clear – you shouldn’t be in your car unless it’s for essential travel,” Commissioner Carroll said.
