KIDS have had a sneak peek of the state’s latest water playground, being heralded as the new South Bank.

As the southeast continued to swelter this week and drought was declared across Logan, kids got the chance to christen the long-awaited $3 million Flagstone Water Play Park.

The free playground, which officially opens next Saturday, includes a 10m treehouse complete with water spouts, jets and water guns.

It is the latest addition to be built in the $12 million Flagstone Regional Park, which opened last Christmas.

Its opening will be a week after Logan was declared drought stricken.

But Logan acting chief executive Silvio Trinca said it would adhere to council’s sustainability policy.

“Water use is minimised by recycling, filtering and sanitising. Evaporation is reduced through a combination of shade sails and non-porous surfaces,” he said.

“Flagstone is one of the fastest growing areas in Logan and this partnership between the council and developer Peet Limited has delivered a superb family facility in time for the school holidays.

“As well as being a great addition to the booming suburb, it is also another reason for visitors to come and spend a fun day in Logan.”

The park also includes a competition-standard skate plaza and one of Queensland’s first water play areas for dogs.

Next week’s launch will be a family event with performances by the Dead Puppet Society and their interactive mechanical pelicans used in the stage show Storm Boy.

For kids who like to be balanced, Flipside Circus will hold all-ages workshops with a trapeze.

The party atmosphere will be supported with a DJ playing beach and summer vibes and there will also be prizes of 100 Ugly Xmas Rashies, beach balls, caps, beach mats and paddle tennis sets.

Special guest Aussie Santa will also make an appearance.

The 10 hectare Flagstone Regional Park is part of the $6.7 billion Flagstone City development which includes more than 330 hectares of public open space and more than 200km of pedestrian paths and cycleways around a future 126 hectare city centre.

Already 6000 people live there.

Over the next 30 years, more than 12,000 homes are expected to be built — all within five minutes’ walk of a park.

The Water Play Park launch will be held between 12pm and 6pm on Saturday, December 21 at Flagstone Regional Rec Park, Trailblazer Drive, Flagstone, just 10 minutes from Jimboomba.
