A LOGAN Reserve mum is counting her blessings after the state government promised to fund a lollipop lady outside her local primary school.

The state vow came less than a week after the mum and her four children were nearly wiped out by a truck while crossing busy School Rd.

Mrs Uasilaa said the near miss was because the spot where she crossed the road was not a designated pedestrian crossing and vehicles did not have to give way to pedestrians.

She contacted council last week and was eventually told the state had given the green light to funding a lollipop lady patrolled crossing and all that was required was for council to approve officer designs for the road.

“Now, all we need to do is to raise awareness about people crossing and get drivers to slow down during peak times while we wait for the lollipop lady, which the council said could be installed over the September holidays,” she said.

Logan City Council rejected pleas for a dedicated crossing and lollipop lady in 2015, but welcomed last week’s state promise.

Councillor Phil Pidgeon, whose division 9 includes the school, said council officers and state regulations ruled out an unsupervised zebra crossing.

He said the lack of safety on the stretch of road was well known but after two years of working with the school and residents, council had not found a solution.

“I was only advised last week that approval was given to allocate and fund a lollipop person for School Rd and council will support this with the appropriate works,” he said.

“Council assisted in making an application to the Department of Transport to get a lollipop crossing. The school had to make the application, not council. This is a fantastic outcome for the community and shows what can be achieved when we work together.”

Cr Pidgeon was behind getting funding for a pedestrian refuge on School Rd.
