Family clings to Mick Doohan photo as reminder of motorcycle loving dad’s final days

A Logan family is clinging to the final photo of a beloved father who was smiling for the camera with motorcycle royalty Mick Doohan earlier this month before tragedy struck.

A Logan family is hoping to raise enough money to pay to cremate their motorcycle-loving dad and bring his ashes back from Victoria after he died suddenly while on a trip to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix this month.

Loganholme dad Trevor Barton’s trip of a lifetime turned to tragedy when he died after a heart attack, forcing his family to make the agonising decision to have him cremated in Melbourne so his ashes could be brought home to Queensland.

Daughter Adelia Barton, who travelled with her dad and his wife to Phillip Island this month, has asked for help to pay for the cremation in Melbourne.

“I’m doing this to help my family bring him home,” she said.

“We are choosing to have him cremated in Melbourne and brought home to us back in Queensland.”

Mr Barton was “beyond excited” when he got pit passes to meet some of the world’s best motorcycle riders, including his hero Mick Doohan, in what he described as one of the happiest moments of his life.

Spaniard Alex Rins on a Suzuki Ecstar won the event in 40m 50.654s followed by another Spaniard Marc Marquez riding for Honda with Italian Francesco Bagnaia in third place.

However, things took a turn for the worst three days after he had been in Victoria when he was boarding a bus to go to Phillip Island for a day watching the Grand Prix.

Bystanders rushed to his aid and he was admitted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where doctors had to give the family the dreadful news that he would not survive.

They told the family his brain injury was extensive as he had no oxygen to his brain for approximately 16 minutes.

An MRI showed how severe and extremely damaged his brain was and Mr Barton never regained consciousness.

“The doctors told us the brain is unforgiving, once the damage is done it’s irreparable,” his daughter said.

“He would never be able to do anything for himself again.

“As a family whole, we decided that this is not the way Tree would ever want to live.

“We knew from the moment the doctors told us, it would not be the life he would want,” his daughter said online.

Family and friends paid tribute to Mr Barton with many remembering him as a hard worker with a soft heart.

His daughter said he worked 12 hours a day but would still find time at the end of the day to mow the lawn and tidy up the yard.

“For those who knew him, he could barely sit still on a good day,” Ms Barton said.

“He would drive 1.5 hours just to help his little girl for five minutes and then drive all the way back home.”

The Honda legend and five-time 500cc champion, who lives at the Gold Coast, was not available for comment.

The family said it would hold a party to celebrate Mr Barton’s life and share their memories of him at a date to be discussed.
