What started as a friendly, family day out at the park ended in a brutal fishing knife gutting as two families with a toxic history confronted each other in Eagleby.

Jason Selway, 28, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to unlawful wounding and possession of a knife in a public place.

The court heard that on September 17, 2021 at 3pm Selway was in a park in Eagleby with his young children.

Another family who he had a toxic, combative history with entered the park and confronted Selway.

The court heard they verbally abused his partner and accused Selway of having a gun to which he aggressively replied.

“If I had a gun you’d all be dead,” he said.

The man then punched Selway twice in the face, knocking him backwards.

Selway pulled out a fishing knife and stabbed the victim and they continued to fight in the sandpit of the park in front of families.

A stranger in the park then separated the two men.

The victim received a haematoma, a laceration to his spleen and had internal bleeding as a result of the stabbing.

The court heard the victim had a 2cm laceration to the left side of his back and a 3cm laceration to his spleen.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said the circumstances of the offending were serious but also bizarre.

“This is an example of adults that should know better but behave appallingly,” he said.

“You were lucky there wasn’t a more serious injury because once a knife is introduced, it becomes very dangerous.”

Selway received an 18 month suspended prison sentence and had already served 85 days of pre-sentence custody.
