A CONTROVERSIAL development in Logan Reserve has been given the tick of approval despite an officer report claiming it failed to meet key development criteria.

At Tuesday’s full council meeting Logan City councillors voted to allow a 19.425ha block to be carved up for 216 lots for housing and a child care centre.

Officers said the development was not consistent with council’s plan for the area, it failed to protect ecosystems and was on land earmarked for an intersection.

The development raised concerns with Councillor Phil Pidgeon, who slammed the project because it was an overdevelopment of the site.

Before the project goes ahead developers Saunders Havill Group will have to follow 13 stringent conditions.

“It’s a nightmare in the making,” he said.

“The proposed development is deficient in a number of areas ... council is happy to approve it as long as it meets certain criteria.

“We are running out of patience a little bit with people who are trying to push the envelope. There is heavy vegetation and flooding constraints on the site and a requirement to make a road dedication which needs to happen.”

The decision will force a horse training centre owned by Scott Miller to relocate.

“I feel I don’t have a choice but to move regardless of whether the application goes ahead or not,” he said.

“There’s another big residential development happening on the property behind me and our house and horse stables are on the border.” The property’s emerging community zone will be changed to low density residential to facilitate development, which will occur across six stages.
