The dog, which is not microchipped, was left at the vets after no address could be found.

Staff at the clinic posted photographs of the dog on Facebook and a day later a woman arrived at the clinic to claim the dog.

“We are saddened to confirm that a lost, unmicrochipped dog was handed in last Sunday and the following day our team was contacted by a person who deceptively posed as the owner,” the spokesman for Our Vet clinic said.

“We are assisting the police in their investigation into the matter, which we take very seriously.

“We are currently reviewing internal procedures to identify if there were steps that could have been taken to avoid this situation.

“At present, our greatest concern is for the wellbeing of the animal and their loving owner.”

Owner Jacki Cornelius said she was devastated and had been living in agony wondering what happened to her “furbaby”.

She said her white chihuahua “went for a wander” on Sunday, June 7 and was picked up by a member of the Browns Plains community, who dropped her off at the clinic to check any microchips for an address. The dog was left at the clinic for the owner.

However, when Ms Cornelius made contact with the vet, the clinic told her the dog had already been collected.

A complaint was lodged with police after the vet was unable to provide further details of the person who picked up the dog and no one has returned her to either a vet or the pound.

Reunited Pets Queensland and Lost Dog Logan posted photos of the missing pooch and many have put out a call to all residents to look for the 14-year-old.

A spokesman for Our Vet, Browns Plains said good pet care was important and staff would always treat pets if they were sick or injured.

The spokesman also said they were proud of the clinic’s reputation as an ethical company and all staff took their jobs seriously.
