A dedicated cat lover, who has saved thousands of furry felines and even named her dog Kitty, has been honoured with one of Logan’s top awards.
HUNT AFTER CAT SNARED IN ILLEGAL TRAP
Logan’s own cat woman Deborah Bright was named the city’s Volunteer of the Year on the weekend.
The devoted cat rescuer loves felines so much, she even named her dog Kitty Pearl.
Ms Bright won the award after rescuing and rehoming more than 10,000 cats and kittens over the past 30 years.
“I have always loved cats because they are really the under dogs and are blamed for messing up people’s gardens,” she said.
“But it’s the humans who dump them who are at fault.
“There’s nothing like seeing a mumma cat with her kittens. My daughter Candice reckons I love cats more than her — but that’s not true — she is my kitten.”
Ms Bright’s charity, Little Paws Kitten Rescue, was founded in 1990 and focuses on rehoming local cats and educating people about caring for felines.
Ms Bright and her team of 25 volunteers take the cats to the Trinder Park Nursing Home and to an aged care facility in Beaudesert.
At any point in time she has more than 40 cats at her home, all overseen by Kitty the dog.
“Kitty was the first name that popped into my mind when I got her as a puppy,” she said.
“She’s an honorary cat.”
Ms Bright was unable to attend the awards as she was busy looking after a pregnant cat delivering more kittens to add to her 40-plus collection at home.
Another winner at the awards was Rochedale Springwood Meals on Wheels service, which was recognised for serving up hot food and drinks and some love to hundreds of people in Logan.
Meals on Wheels president Rod Shaw said the award was recognition for many people who had helped the charity.
He the award would look great in the new Meals on Wheels digs at Rochedale South.
