Meadowbrook residents and business owners are living in fear after a group of youths has started meeting in a shopping centre carpark, despite state and federal rules banning public gatherings during the coronavirus epidemic.

Anxiety escalated on Sunday night when shop owners reported thick smoke from tyre burnouts blacking out their stores.

Up to 15 cars were parked in the Hungry Jack’s and Oporto’s carpark on Loganlea Rd, near the Logan Hospital, when police were called by a Hungry Jack’s manager.

An Oporto manager said despite the police attending on Sunday, the group had continued to meet on Monday and Tuesday,

The manager said she felt intimidated by the hoons who had created so much black smoke from burnouts she could not see from her store to the neighbouring Coles Express service station.

“They are aggressive and come in and want to use the toilet but when they are told to leave, they get aggressive,” she said.

“We were concerned for our staff manning the registers at night.”

Concerned Loganlea resident Lynne Grant, a Queensland Health worker, said police told her to ring Queensland Health to report the breach of the coronavirus rules.

“I work for Queensland Health and it’s not up to us to patrol hoons who are breaking the law and putting other people’s lives in jeopardy by possibly spreading coronavirus.”
