HerStory: What goes on behind closed doors

A Logan methamphetamine user conducted a reign of violent terror against his a woman over a two-month period, headbutting, choking, suffocation and assaulting her on various occasions.

Jimboomba man Brodie Christopher Smith, 22, was jailed for three years in Beenleigh District Court on Friday.

He was granted immediate parole, having been remanded in custody since January 31 last year, a period of about 13 months.

The court heard the offences were committed between December 21, 2019 and Smith’s arrest on the last day of January.

The court heard sickening details of Smith’s brutal reign of terror.

The three common assault charges stemmed from occasions where Smith headbutted the victim, pushed her head into a bedside table and pushed her headlong into a kitchen cabinet.

The suffocation charge involved Smith placing his hands over the mouth and nostrils of his victim for about five seconds, while calling her “vulgar and degrading names”.

The choking charge, meanwhile, involved Smith grabbing the throat of his victim and squeezing while she was on her bed.

All offences were committed while Smith was subject to a probation order.

Defence counsel James Feely told the court his client’s offending was precipitated by a period of heavy meth use.

He told the court Smith had a “dysfunctional childhood” and was living at a homeless shelter at South Brisbane following a period of previous incarceration when the offences occurred.

Mr Feely said his client was “too immature” to deal with difficult situations in the relationship, and “if he had his time again he would have done things differently”.

Smith was released from custody to live with his supportive parents and seek work in concreting.
