Brisbane coronavirus on northside sees city divide

The coronavirus has made Brisbane’s northside-southside divide more extreme than ever, with a far greater number of coronavirus cases registered on one side of the river out of the combined Metro North and Metro South total of 588.

The state’s latest case of cornavirus registered at a southside school at Park Ridge on Tuesday, has thrown the spotlight back on Brisbane’s north-south divide.

Despite the latest case in southeast Queensland being on the southside, the northside of Brisbane is where more cases have been clocked.

There have been 321 cases in Metro North Health District, compared to 267 in Metro South.

The southern district, which takes in Princess Alexandra, QEII, Logan, Redland and Beaudesert hospitals, has had a total of 15,746 people in quarantine but has not recorded any deaths.

However, there are still cases of the virus being recorded in the south with 256 people currently in quarantine in the Metro South Health Area.

The southern statistics compared favourably to the northside where 803 people are currently in quarantine with a total for that area over the past four months of 19,697 and three deaths.

Brisbane’s southside also compared favourably to other areas including the Darling Downs where there has been two deaths and the Sunshine Coast where a resident died.

Toowoomba man Garry Kirstenfeldt contracted the disease on a cruise and died in March, and an 85-year-old man from the Darling Downs died in April.

Logan Hospital, a large component of the southern region, has treated six inpatients for the virus with the last discharged in April.

It has also tested 9572 people.

Queensland Health data showed there were nine cases in Logan that were locally acquired from close contact with someone who had the virus.

Brisbane, Gold Coast and Moreton regions all recorded more than 10 cases each.

More concerning were the six cases locally acquired in Logan but with no known contact. Only Brisbane recorded more cases from unknown contact with 17 recorded as of July 28.

Logan also had between 18 and 32 cases contracted overseas which compared favourably to the Gold Coast, Moreton and Sunshine Coast where there were between 33 and 130 cases.

Across the entire state, women in the 20-29 age group continued to be at the highest risk with 151 cases recorded in Queensland compared to 92 men.

That age bracket was the worst affected followed by those aged between 60 and 69, which recorded 177 cases or 16.4 per cent.

Metro South Health refused to say what, if any, new measures had been introduced at hospitals including in Logan, since the outbreaks in Victoria.

But, the spokesman said Logan Hospital would continue to provide free COVID-19 tests every day between 8am and 6pm.

Outside those hours, tests are conducted at the hospital’s emergency department.

“Queensland Health will continue to respond to any new cases of COVID-19 according to existing strategies and plans that have been in place since the start of the pandemic,” the spokesman said.
