A school in Beaudesert was shut down after a meth addict was caught performing a disgraceful act outside before striking again outside a daycare and shopping centre.

A 39-year-old Beaudesert man caught masturbating outside a school, daycare and shopping centre in front of two children before being arrested by police has been sentenced in court.

Brendan Arthur Jones, 39, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on November 10 to two counts of an indecent act to insult or offend, three counts of an indecent act in a public place and possession of a drug utensil.

The court heard Jones committed all the offending on October 31, 2019 after being affected by prolonged use of methamphetamine.

The indecent acts occurred at a Beaudesert school where he exposed himself and masturbated while walking in front of the school, at one point a 10-year-old child witnessed his behaviour.

The school was forced to shut down for the day after hearing of the incident.

The next offence happened outside a Beaudesert daycare centre where Jones again exposed himself and masturbated before he was caught later that same day masturbating in a shopping centre.

He was arrested by police at the shopping centre.

Jones’ defence said he had suffered from drug addiction for a long time and was working with a treatment plan.

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy considered a sentence that would deter Jones from further offending but also protect the community.

“You exposed yourself to two schoolchildren and were in the vicinity of a daycare centre so I need to consider protecting any children from your further offending,” she said.

“There is also a need for deterrence.”

Jones was sentenced to two months in prison, suspended for one year and he was ordered to complete a two-year period of probation where drug testing was required.
