Boat ramp and turning lane plans for Logan-Redland bottleneck

Three people have died and dozens hospitalised on a stretch of road referred to as a goat track where a housing estate for 10,000 is being mooted. But the only scheduled state government plans to upgrade the road include a turning lane to a proposed boat ramp.

THE state government has no immediate plans to widen the busy one-lane Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd, despite developer plans to build a housing estate for 10,000 people on the road along with a massive sewage treatment plant.

The state has released details of its plans to build a turning lane to a proposed boat ramp it is building off the busy road, where three people have died in separate accidents since September 2002.

The state said it would put in a $2.1 million right-turn lane to Riedel Rd, where it will also build a $1.5 million boat ramp and floating walkway with work starting this month.

Riedel Rd was once the address for the ill-fated proposed Lakes Resort, which was endorsed by former Logan City councillors Luke Smith and Russell Lutton but never came to fruition.

The turning lane will be built on Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd, less than 5km from the site of the proposed Shoreline housing estate for 10,000 people which Lendlease has bought.

Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd, which becomes Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd is the major road link between Logan and Redland and is predominantly single-lane each way.

The state did not give details of any other upgrades or the schedule for widening the busy road.

It did reveal it planned a $4.35 million project to install traffic signals at the Kruger Rd intersection, for Kimberley College and Carbrook State School, in the 2020-21 to 2021-22 financial years.

It also said a $130,000 safety improvement project for a right-turn lane from Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd to the schools was completed in September.

There have been 143 accidents recorded on Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road in Cornubia and Carbrook since 2001 with three people killed, and 42 people hospitalised from their injuries.

Logan resident Kathy Milwain said she was appalled at the state government’s apathy.

“This is a major road and it is still treated like a goat track,” she said.

“Plans to build a housing estate for 10,000 on this road is a recipe for disaster – especially if trucks are going to be used to move the millions of litres of sewage from the estate.

“Three people have died on this stretch of road and all the state is doing is building a new boat ramp.”
