Black ute impounded ahead of Schoolies as anti-hoon campaign kicks into gear

A crackdown on hoons ahead of tomorrow’s Schoolies Week is well under way with a Nerang man feeling the weight of the law.

A police crackdown on hoons and bad driving in Logan ahead of tomorrow’s Schoolies Week is well under way with a Nerang man already feeling the weight of the law when his ute was impounded.

Police impounded the black ute and charged a man and a 17-year-old after a series of alleged hooning incidents, including noisy smoking burnouts and racing around a roundabout, south of Brisbane.

Dramatic POLAIR 1 video footage, taken on Wednesday night, shows a black utility travelling through Loganlea and doing skids and burnouts leaving road bitumen smoking.

A second car, a black hatchback, joined in and footage shows two cars travelling around a roundabout.

Logan District Road Policing Unit responded and charged two men after the cars stopped at an address on University Dr, Meadowbrook.

They also impounded the black utility for 90 days.

Officers spoke to the both drivers and later charged a 23-year-old Nerang man, after he allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.051 per cent.

He was also charged with driving offences after police said the black ute was unregistered, uninsured and unlicensed.

He is due to appear at Beenleigh Magistrates Court next month.

A 17-year-old Waterford West boy was also charged with alleged drink driving and is due to appear at the Beenleigh Childrens Court.

The incident came in the middle of a week when police in Logan were cracking down on road incidents in the lead up to tomorrow’s Schoolies Week and the release of startling statistics showing Logan’s road toll increase was the highest in the state.

Logan recorded 19 deaths on its roads so far this year, compared to 16 at the same time last year.

Logan District Road Policing Unit senior constable Jonathon McDonald said this kind of driving behaviour had been negatively affecting road safety in Logan and was a continued focus of Operation Own It, the slogan for the campaign started this week.

“We are aware of many reports of this kind of dangerous driving behaviour in Logan,” senior constable McDonald said.

“We were very fortunate that no one was hurt during this incident.

“There really is no place for this kind of driving and behaviour on our roads in Logan and we encourage everyone to not risk their own and other peoples’ safety.”
