Nick Cummins reckons as a young lad he wasn’t much chop with the ladies in Logan.
“I was too worried about bloody, was it cooties or something?” the former Wallabies star said.
“I did actually have a girlfriend, for two weeks which is pretty long.”
The Honey Badger’s wooing skills have come a long way since he attended St Francis College in Crestmead.
Tomorrow night he will appear on Channel 10’s TV dating show The Bachelor.
One of eight kids, Cummins grew up “chasing kangaroos” on a small farm in Chambers Flat.
He has fond memories of life at school — but more of balls than books.
“Yeah I didn’t do much school work — that was pretty boring at the time. But I liked to cause a bit of a raucous when I could,” he said.
“I remember a lot of training sessions down there with all my Polynesian brothers. We had a pretty strong side, we used to bloody kill it in the inter-school comps.”
The college’s acting head of campus for Year 6-12 Michelle Kelly remembers teaching Cummins physical recreation in his final year of school.
“He was never shy,” she said.
“He was a larrikin back then as well.”
Ms Kelly said there had been a “buzz” around the school ahead of the former student’s appearance as The Bachelor and that she would be cheering him on from her loungeroom.
She only had one pearl of wisdom for her former student.
“Just to be himself — he’s pretty good at that,” she said.
When Cummins was announced as The Bachelor earlier this year, he said he did get a bit of a tongue-lashing from his friends.
“They just laugh. A couple of them sent a message just ‘Fair Dinkum?’” he said.
“But stiff bickies, that’s what it is and it was worth a shot and I had a blast.”
He said going into the reality TV show, his relationship goals and what he is looking for in a partner had shifted.
“It used to be like a certain type so blonde, tall, bloody all those things,” he said.
“It’s not any of that anymore.”
“It’s now more about someone who’s unconditional and has a life path that lines up with yours so you’re not staring at each other, you’re both looking forward. I think that’s the fuel, if you’re both doing that, nothing can stop (sic) youse.”
“Love is something you can’t just sort of march in be like yeah I’m going to get this because it’s its own beast in itself. It’s gotta come naturally.”
But does he find love?
“You’ll have to wait, watch and see and enjoy — it’s a bloody cracker,” he said.
