THE state government has launched a $10.5 million seniors accommodation project in Logan as part of a plan to make better use of public housing assets.

Under the plan, seniors wanting to downsize from larger public housing properties in the Logan Housing Service Centre area will be given first opportunity to move in to the new units.

Brisbane Housing Company joined forces with the state to build the 35 state-of-the-art units in Thornhill St, Springwood.

BHC chief executive David Cant said the development was exclusively for public housing tenants who were aged over 55.

“We are excited to build on the success of our award-winning Caggara House apartments in Mt Gravatt, and provide more new, high-quality homes for seniors,” he said

“The development will also free up public housing for growing families who need more bedrooms and larger yards.”

Mr Cant said people interested in transferring to Thornhill St should contact BHC to find out more about the development.

“We hope to have tenants moving in by the end of next year, so we encourage anyone who is interested to speak with us as soon as possible,” he said.

“We will be holding a series of information sessions, informal tours of our other seniors’ communities and opportunities to meet BHC tenants who have successfully moved and downsized from public housing.”

Housing Minister Mick de Brenni said the new one-bedroom apartments would give 35 Logan seniors the chance to downsize from larger, ageing public housing homes and open up opportunities for families or for redevelopment.

He said the units would be built to the highest platinum and gold standards with great accessibility and would cater to those in wheelchairs.

“In Logan, we have a commitment to deliver more than 3000 properties and generate nearly $1 billion of investment, as well as 2400 jobs, in the Logan community over the next 20 years,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I’ve been determined to make sure that people can stay in our community as they age and this new development will give people that opportunity,” he said.

“It’s a perfect spot which is only a short walk down to Arndale shops and close to transport and medical services.”

Mr De Brenni said the cutting-edge, liveable design would include lifts, wider halls and doorways and everything for disabled.

The units will also include a common barbecue area and community garden, as well as a community room.

BHC first built seniors accommodation at Mt Gravatt’s Caggara House.
