Logan coronavirus: Hyperdome’s anxious wait amid cluster fears
Employees say foot traffic has fallen off a cliff today amid fears of a new cluster developing in Logan, as some shoppers find creative ways to social distance.

Shoppers and employees at Logan Hyperdome are enduring a nervous wait to see if southeast Queensland’s latest cluster takes hold in the city, after it was revealed on the weekend more than 20 locations had been visited by a COVID-19 positive case.
Barista Lachlann Martin from Vintage on Tap’s pop-up espresso bar said foot traffic in the centre had “dropped dramatically” today, while he and his co-worker Jacob Norman were expected to wear face masks again for the first time since two women with coronavirus, Olivia Winnie Muranga and Diana Lasu, infamously lied on their border passes after travelling to Melbourne.
Mr Norman, however, noted this weekend’s trade was still strong.
Holly McKinley at Mobile Beat said the impact of Logan’s latest potential cluster on the centre’s foot traffic was less than when Ms Muranga and Ms Lasu’s cases were confirmed, but agreed today was unusually quiet.
“We were dead, dead, dead after those two, we started closing early,” she said.
Liam Martin at Candy Time was another who agreed the centre’s patronage had taken a hit today.
Yet not all believed there was an impact, with at least one other employee in the centre saying there was a negligible effect.
About one-third of employees in shops around the centre could be seen wearing face masks, while very few shoppers wore them, with many of those who did being of Asian complexion.
Two shoppers who were wearing masks were Loganholme locals Glynn Francis and Jeannie Hanslow.
The pair said they have been wearing masks for “a couple weeks now” and have cut their visits to the Hyperdome to the bare minimum.
“Not enough people are social distancing,” Ms Hanslow said.
“You don’t know who’s fine but got it (i.e. asymptomatic).”
The pair said where once they would enjoy coffees in the food court together, they now order takeaways and take them to secluded benches behind the Foodworks to enjoy them away from the masses.
Meanwhile, Mr Francis said he has discovered a novel way to enforce social distancing – with his trusty umbrella, which he describes as the “best tool”.
As well as being roughly 1.5m to measure distancing, he also noted it could be used to push elevator buttons and the like.
“And it’s in Collingwood colours,” the Australian rules fanatic enthused.
Centre management was contacted for comment.
