HOCKEY

LOCAL stars Daniel Beale, Matthew Swann, Jake Whetton, Jamie Dwyer and Mark Knowles will look to continue the Kookaburras’ form resurgence in Monday morning’s mouth-watering quarter-final clash with the Netherlands.

Australia, ranked no. 1 in the world, with square off with the no. 2 ranked Dutch in a knockout battle at 7am, with the Kookaburras desperate to break a medal drought stretching back to 2004.

They began their campaign with an unconvincing 2-1 win over New Zealand, before back-to-back defeats against Spain and Belgium.

However, they showed signs of their best form to down Great Britain 2-1, wrapping up their pool campaign with a 9-0 thrashing of Brazil.

“It’s gonna be a huge clash, obviously playing against the world’s no. 2 team,” captain Mark Knowles said.

“We know that we’re ready now. We had a slow start and I think we weren’t quite up to speed with where we needed to be. The Dutch bring a great challenge that I think everyone is waiting to see, so I think we’re definitely ready for it.

“We feel we play very well against the Dutch. There’s maybe some mental demons for them from the World Cup and some World League performances we put in against them so it’s quite a good match up in terms of the style we play.

“We’re certainly on the up after Great Britain and then a good hitout against Brazil. We’re very well prepared, we think.”

The Australians dropped to fifth in their group after a 10-8 defeat to Serbia on Saturday, with only the top four in each group qualifying for the quarterfinals.

Brisbane Barracudas captain Howden and the Sharks must triumph over the first-placed Greece to have any chance of leapfrogging Hungary or Serbia in Group A.

The match starts at 3.10am Monday morning AEST.

AUSTRALIAN BOOMERS versus VENEZUELA — Monday, 8am

THE Boomers can seal top spot in Group A with a victory in their final pool match against Venezuela in the morning.

Australia have been impressive in the group stages and need second spot, which means they would avoid the U.S. until the grand final.
