LNP to splash out on westside school upgrades

The LNP has continued its bid to win the education vote, promising upgrades of two westside primary schools considered among the best in Queensland. SEE WHAT THEY WILL GET

The LNP will build a new pool at Milton State School and aircondition Ironside State School hall if it wins power on October 31.

The party also reiterated an earlier promise to not allow a controversial “prison-style’’ fence around the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology sports fields.

Shadow Education Minister Jarrod Bleijie and LNP candidate for Maiwar, Lauren Day, are expected to announce the three election pledges today.

LNP candidate for Cooper, Trent Wiseman, is also expected to attend the announcement at Milton.

Mrs Day said she would deliver $3.5 million in funding for a new pool to replace the ageing facility at Milton, in the first term of an LNP government, as well as upgrades to the courtyard.

“I am incredibly excited about this announcement, which will greatly benefit Milton

State School,” Mr Bleijie said.

“The Milton State School pool was built in the 1930s and needs replacing.

“It is an old shell pool design and requires manual water churn.”

Mrs Day said the new pool would be a standard 25m long — the existing one is 25 yards in length — allowing it to be used for swimming competitions.

One more lane would be added so it had enough space for nearby schools such as Petrie Terrace State School to use as well. The filter would also be modernised.

“I have worked very hard to secure funding for Milton State School and I am

excited a new pool means better filtration and therefore less chemicals,” Mrs Day said.

“It means and LNP Government will deliver a more environmentally friendly pool.”

New shade sails and resurfacing of safety flooring would be built in the courtyard.

The LNP will also today announce $200,000 to aircondition Ironside’s hall.

“I have listened to the Ironside P&C and I am aware the airconditioning has been an ongoing issue,” Mrs Day said.

Mr Bleijie said delivering new airconditioning for the St Lucia school, soon to celebrate its 150th anniversary, was a priority within their first term of government.

Mr Bleijie also repeated a promise, made earlier this year, to not allow a controversial fence at the Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology in Toowong after locals waged a pitched battle to stop it.

Residents feared being locked out of sports fields they had used for many years to exercise their dogs, ride bikes and walk.

QASMT wanted to build the fence to stop vandals who damaged equipment during its recent building program.

“Locals will be able to continue using green space in and around QASMT under an

LNP Government,” Mr Bleijie said.

Previous claims the community had a “win’’ about stopping a fence being built were

misleading, Mrs Day claimed.

She said the Labor Government was promising only to delay building the fence until “community consultation’’ was finalised — after the election.
