List of cancelled school open days, fetes, parades

Coronavirus is wreaking havoc on school fetes, often a P & C’s single biggest fundraiser, as well as open days and even Easter Hat parades.

Dozens of Easter Hat Parades, fetes, school discos, camps and open days planned for the next two months have been cancelled at southeast Queensland schools.

Most private and state schools have also postponed assemblies and some larger schools have introduced staggered lunch hours to reduce the number of children playing together at one time.

Some schools are also postponing parent/teacher interviews or conducting them over the phone only

Here is a list of some of the cancellations and changes (current at 2pm, March 17):

RAINWORTH STATE SCHOOL

The Prep to Year 2 Easter Hat Parade has been cancelled, as have assemblies, junior swimming, interschool sport, cross country runs, band and string practice, the Anzac Day ceremony and parent teacher interviews. No decision has yet been made on the August Rainbow Carnival, although the P & C meets later this week.

ASHGROVE STATE SCHOOL

The school’s fete, which is usually held on Mother’s Day each year and is one of the biggest fetes in Brisbane, has been cancelled.

STUARTHOLME SCHOOL

Its Open Day last Saturday (March 14), one of the most anticipated of the year in Brisbane, was cancelled after months of media and on-street advertising.

ST PAUL’S SCHOOL, BALD HILLS

Year 7 Open Morning on June 3 is still going ahead at this stage, as is the Twilight Open Evening on June 10.

WAVELL STATE HIGH

It’s Open Day on Sunday, May 17, from 2-4.30pm is still going ahead, but is under review.

MT ALVERNIA COLLEGE (KEDRON)

It has cancelled the Sunday, May 17, Open Day.

GUARDIAN ANGELS PRIMARY SCHOOL (WYNNUM)

It’s fete on May 24 has been postponed.

BARDON STATE SCHOOL

No decision has yet been made on the Bardon Mayfair, the school’s major annual fundraiser and one of the first on the annual westside school fete calendar.

ST JOHN FISHER COLLEGE (BRACKEN RIDGE)

It has cancelled the April 28 Open Day. But it is still encouraging interested families to book into one of its monthly college tours, with the next one occurring on May 8. Register at stjohnfishercollege.qld.edu.au

JINIBARA STATE SCHOOL

Term one disco cancelled, as is the Easter Bonnet parade and sharing parades. Cross country runs and year 1 excursion to Downfall Creek postponed.

SOUTHERN CROSS CATHOLIC COLLEGE (KIPPA RING CAMPUS)

Monday Parade and Wednesday Assembly both cancelled for the rest of the term. School excursions and other external events postponed.

Brisbane Catholic Education met on Sunday night and has advised its other schools to take similar measures, plus extra hygiene including a ban on students high fiving each other.

PADUA COLLEGE (KEDRON)

It has cancelled the Open Day planned for Sunday, May 17. At this point, the next College event is a Rector’s Tour on Tuesday, June 9.

NASHVILLE STATE SCHOOL (BRIGHTON)

Parent teacher interviews set for week 9 (March 23-27) will now be held via phone.At the booked time the teacher will phone the parent and conduct the interview over the phone.

MITCHELTON STATE SCHOOL

The school is offering parent teacher interviews via both phone and in person.

HILLBROOK ANGLICAN SCHOOL (ENOGGERA)

The school has advised that Year 10 interviews scheduled for March 19 are cancelled; parents will receive written reports and phone calls if needed.
