As people around the world prepare to celebrate Chinese New Year, we went looking for some of the top southeast Queensland Chinese restaurants and narrowed the list down to 16 standouts.

Dane Huitfeldt, manager of Paddington’s King Tea, said the region’s Chinese eateries fell into one of three categories: local cuisine; specialty cuisine; up-market dining.

“When you're in the mood for sticky, tangy, MSG-fuelled goodness, a neighbourhood place with a good reputation and (good) service is always a winner,” Mr Huitfeldt said,

“Then there are places that specialise in just a few things like dumplings or pork belly, which takes time and research and usually an adventurous group of friends, but is a fun journey.

“(Lastly) you can go for something more up-market and get the benefits of both scenarios, with the added benefit of a good drink menu and polished service.”

Chinese New Year is on January 22.
