TALENTED singer Jo Willans, of Geebung, has developed a show designed to put audiences in a meditative state as part of this year’s Anywhere Theatre Festival.
Skyward is a collaborative piece between Willan’s company Republic of Song and Brisbane Powerhouse-based Vulcana Women’s Circus.
The show combines calming classical music as sung by Willans with an elegant aerial circus routine performed by aerialist Georgia Bale.
Willans, who is participating in the festival for the third time, said she wanted to offer something different for the Anywhere audiences this year.
“We’re having a mindful May,” she said.
“We wanted to share an experience with our audience that would be uplifting and chilled.
“Mental health is something people are increasingly aware of and a mindful May is an opportunity to find a bit more peace.”
The soundtrack will be comprised of music from twentieth century composers including Copland, Barber and Previn as well as minimalists Arvo Pärt and Michael Nyman.
“We’ve hand-picked our soundtrack for its lyrical content, and for beauty and simplicity,” she said.
“The music is uplifting and has a mesmerising quality that is perfect for achieving a contemplative state of mind.
Georgia Bale, of Stones Corner, who trains with Vulcana Women’s Circus said her routine would use a number of different apparatuses including her favourite lyra hoop.
“Some of the songs call for fast spinning and momentum while others need a softer touch, and so we’re using other apparatuses like tissu,” she said.
“We’re using an array of apparatuses and physical theatre to capture the mood of each piece, and I’m working with Jo to get her singing on one of the apparatuses.”
Willans delighted audiences last year with her haunting production The Ballad of Rosie Quinn which took advantage of sound, touch and smell, as the audience was blindfolded.
Skyward will run at Brisbane Powerhouse on May 11-12. Tickets available at: www.anywhere.is
