THE first new high school in the inner south since 1963 could be built near the Ecosciences Precinct at Dutton Park.

Labor MP for South Brisbane, Jackie Trad, said the Government had bought land next to Dutton Park State School, between the Ecosciences Precinct and Park Road station.

“I had to act quickly to secure this land so it could remain public land and as a possible school site option,’’ Ms Trad said.

“This does not mean the land will definitely be the site of the new school.

“I want to work and consult with our community to determine the best use of the land.

“If it’s decided that the site is not appropriate for a school, I think it should be turned into public green space.’’ Ms Trad said the site was being considered for the school location because it was close to public transport and world-class science facilities.

“This site is close to a future key interchange of Cross River Rail,’’ she said.

“We will also be partnering with the University of Queensland for the school curriculum,” Ms Trad said.

“However, before any decisions are made, I am completely committed to consulting with the community.”

Ms Trad said, if re-elected, a Labor Government would build the first new school for the area in 50 years even if another site had to be found.

“This is a brilliant outcome for our growing community and we need to make sure we get the planning right and the location right,” Ms Trad said.

The site selection process will also be informed by expert advice from the independent infrastructure body, Building Queensland.

Ms Trad wrote to local schools late last month to outline the consultation process.

A reference group with representatives from nearby primary and high schools met recently to discuss options.

“The new high school will cater for students from Years 7 to 12, starting in 2021,” she said.

Greens candidate for South Brisbane, Amy McMahon, said: “The Greens and community groups have been pushing for a new high school for several years. We’re pleased to see that pressure is finally paying off.’’

LNP Shadow Education Minister Tracy Davis said: “Labor’s half a billion dollar schools cash splash is nothing more than a desperate attempt to buy votes.

“There is no guarantee this school will even be delivered within the next term of Government.’’
