A former dancer who wowed the world at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in 2018 has had his car keys taken from him after a frightening drink drive crash.
Eika Jay Mimi was two and a half times the legal limit when he smashed into a Moorooka garden wall early in the morning on July 19, Holland Park Magistrates Court heard this morning.
Mimi, unemployed, got into an argument with friends while they were drinking and left in his car, his lawyer Caitlin Shannon-Dear, from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, told the court.
“He is otherwise of exceptional character and danced at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony,’’ she said.
“He had a falling out with his friends and left their address (before crashing his car on Tarragindi Rd about 2.20am).’’

She said her client was relatively young and had struggled with some mental health difficulties after losing a job at Woolworths.
Police prosecutor Lauren Archer said Mimi told police at the crash scene that he had drunk six cups of bourbon and some beers before getting behind the wheel and hitting the brick wall.
She said after police smelled alcohol on Mimi they took a breath specimen, which returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.129.
Magistrate Sue Ganasan said she took into account Mimi’s early guilty plea and the fact he had no similar, recent driving offences on his record.
“You must have given those people (the occupants of the house) a great shock when you crashed into the wall,’’ Ms Ganasan told him.
“At such an early time of the morning it must not have been a nice thing for them.’’
Ms Ganasan fined Mimi $550 and disqualified him from driving for four months.
