Deagon couple gets approval to turn corner store into Greek cafe

A former My Kitchen Rules contestant is one step closer to opening the cafe of his dreams in north Brisbane and there’s a good chance his on-screen cooking mate won’t be far away.

A FORMER My Kitchen Rules (MKR) contestant is one step closer to opening a Greek cafe in north Brisbane and there’s a good chance his TV cooking mate won’t be far away.

Stuss Read appeared in last year’s season of Channel 7’s My Kitchen Rules with brother-in-law Steve Nichols.

Now he and wife Linda have received council approval to turn their Mythos Corner Store at Deagon into a casual dining cafe.

The Reads, who have just returned from a cooking adventure in Papua New Guinea, are excited about the next step in their food journey.

“This is all we’ve ever wanted, it’s an understatement to say that I’m excited,” Mr Read said.

The couple will soon start installing a new kitchen and will apply for a food licence, a process which could take three months.

They hope to open their licensed and slightly renamed Mythos Corner Cafe by May or June.

“That’s the plan but sometimes I feel like there’s a bloke called Murphy-opoulos who keeps following me around throwing a few souvlaki at me,” Mr Read said.

The new cafe will offer a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the meantime the current store will remain open, for as long as possible, offering coffees and Greek sweets from 8am-3pm Tuesday to Sunday.

Stuss and Steve’s MKR instant restaurant was filmed in the Deagon store and the Read’s adjacent home in late 2017 and aired on February 6, 2018.

The duo was eliminated on February 27 following a Sudden Death: Cultural Challenge.

Mr Read said fans of MKR were sure to catch a glimpse of his archaeologist brother-in-law in the new cafe.

“Steve is never a stranger when there’s food involved so I’m sure we’ll be seeing lots of him here,” Mr Read said.

“I’m sure we’ll be having a few nights where we’ll have me and Steve in there (the kitchen) to whip up whatever we can recreate.”

The Reads bought the 80-year-old corner store at 60 Adams St in 2016 with a plan to turn it into a cafe.

They renovated the building, added a coffee machine and started selling Greek sweets.

They closed Mythos in June last year and in September submitted a development application for a change of use to a food and drink outlet and shop.

Brisbane City Council approved the application on February 1.

Mr Read had a stint as head chef at The Greek Club in 2009 and the couple also operated The Greek Guy catering business.

More recently, Mr Read has been working as head chef at Barney Beach Accommodation in Gladstone.
