The founder of a deluxe dessert bar chain has confirmed in an emotional public message that he and his wife Havva have had to close their four outlets at Broadbeach, South Bank and at Westsfield’s Chermside and Mt Gravatt shopping centres.

Arif Memis posted a heart-wrenching message on his personal LinkedIn account saying his Cowch chain was now in liquidation after he had failed to find a buyer.

He had applied for voluntary administration in the hope of finding a way forward, but had been unable to save the business which was struggling since lockdown decimated turnover.

“It is with a heavy heart and a mix of emotions that we write this letter to inform you of the closure and liquidation of our beloved business, Cowch,’’ Mr Memis posted on LinkedIn.

“As founders, owners, and husband and wife team, we have poured our hearts and souls into building Cowch from the ground up and it pains us deeply to reach this difficult decision.

“Over the past four months, Cowch has been in voluntary administration as we desperately sought out an investor who could provide the support needed to keep our dreams alive.

“We explored every avenue, leaving no stone unturned, in the hopes of finding a lifeline that would allow Cowch to continue serving our delightful dessert cocktails and mouth-watering desserts.

“Regrettably, despite our unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, we have been unable to secure the necessary investment.

“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who has been part of our journey.

“Our incredible team members, who have become like family, have worked tirelessly to create an atmosphere that was warm, inviting and filled with laughter.

“Our loyal customers, whom we consider our extended family, have shown us unwavering support, returning time and time again to indulge in our delectable treats and enjoy the Cowch experience.

“To the talented chefs and creative minds who brought our dessert visions to life in our production facility, we are forever grateful for your dedication and passion.

“Your culinary skills and innovative flair have been the backbone of Cowch and we are proud of the sweet creations that have brought joy to so many.’’

Gazhus Pty Ltd, trading as Cowch Southbank and Cowch Bar, as well as Cowch South City Pty Ltd, Cowch Production Pty Ltd, Cowch Leasing Pty Ltd, Cowch IP Pty Ltd, Cowch HQ Pty Ltd, Cowch Holdings Pty Ltd, Cowch Franchising Pty Ltd, Cowch Chermside Pty Ltd and Cowch Broadbeach Pty Ltd have been placed in voluntary liquidation.

SV Partners was appointed liquidator on July 31.

The first Cowch store opened in Brisbane’s South Bank in 2014. It became a franchise in 2019.

Mr Memis, who posted that he was now looking for a new job, said Cowch had been a labour of love and a dream nurtured over the years since he and Havva left Sydney for a new life in Brisbane.

“Our aim is to minimise the impact on our dedicated staff members, loyal suppliers and cherished customers as we navigate these uncharted waters,’’ he said.

“While this chapter of our lives may be coming to an end, we believe that new doors will open, bringing fresh opportunities and exciting adventures.’’

During Covid the couple set up a production facility to boost business and tried a crowdfunding initiative to help pay for equipment for it and for a smaller gelato bar.

At one point the production facility was making products for 30 southeast Queensland stores including IGA supermarkets, Hawthorne Garage, Standard Market, Bardon Shed and many cafes, restaurants and hotels.

The business had employed more than 600 staff over the years and funded the tertiary education of nearly 100 trainees.
