SATURDAY’S federal election has captured the betting public’s attention, with Queensland punters spending a record amount on the historic poll.

And while you may not be one for a flutter, bookmaker odds can be a more accurate election compass in some seats (but remember, not always) than pollsters and their data.

Major betting agencies still have Labor as the favourite to win the May 18 election. Sportsbet has Labor taking of 82 of 151 seats across Australia with the Coalition on 63, while Ladbrokes has Labor winning 87 seats and the Coalition, 59. A party requires the magic number of 76 seats to form a majority government.

Sportsbet communications manager Richard Hummerston said a late rush of individual bets between about $1000 and $4000 are being placed on many Queensland seats this week.

“Peter Dutton’s marginal Brisbane electorate of Dickson is the most popular with punters, but the largest individual bets are on two other Queensland seats, Mr Hummerston said.

Herbert in far north Queensland, Blair which includes Ipswich, the multicultural southern Brisbane seat of Moreton and Kennedy in the state’s northern outback have been other big-ticket seats, with the largest individual bets being placed on Moreton and Blair, he said.

Polls consistently indicating a change of government and enormous publicity around the election had buoyed betting with agencies.

“We have had more money come in on this federal election in Queensland and nationally than any other and that comes down to the public and media attention around it. The increase in betting interest goes hand-in-hand with those elements,” Mr Hummerston said.

About 70 per cent of Queensland money wagered was on Bill Shorten’s team, he said.

Ladbrokes has also had record election activity even on long shots such as Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party.

Betting agencies are already predicting they will be paying out millions of dollars next week with a Labor win beckoning and individual hauls up to $230,000 for some lucky punters.

Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton and Labor candidate France have piqued punters interest on the north Brisbane seat of Dickson.
