A man donned bikie gang apparel and called himself "the enforcer” while trying to extort a man out of more than $2000, before later threatening the man’s housemate with a knife, a court has heard.

Kallangur man Brock Kevin Martin was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court on Tuesday for his role as the “muscle” in a three-month extortion of man in Brendale in 2020.

Martin became involved in the offence when a woman he knew allegedly attempted to extort about $2500 from her ex-partner and used Martin to intimidate the victim in January 2020.

“He came in as the muscle or the perceived muscle,” Judge Michael Byrne said.

Martin called the victim and said he was an “enforcer” and demanded a meeting to discuss payment, the court heard.

When the victim arrived at the meeting in Brendale, he was greeted by Martin wearing a jumper with the logo of bikie gang Mongrel Mob.

The victim felt intimidated and that he had no choice to but to agree to a payment plan for the money and later made two payments.

The court heard Martin’s co-accused had not been dealt with yet for the extortion offence.

This was the extent of Martin’s involvement in the extortion, which continued without him until March of 2020.

Later that year, in an unrelated matter, Martin arrived at the extortion victim’s Brendale house where he became angry and threatened the man’s housemate with a knife.

Judge Byrne said it was a “little odd” that this offence happened at the same Brendale house with a different victim.

The court heard Martin drove to the house after seeing the second victim flash his headlights at him.

He entered the house and accused the man of stealing from his store and became angry and violent.

Martin tried punching the man who retaliated and punched Martin, who stumbled backwards and continued to fight the man, despite another housemate trying to diffuse the situation.

The court heard Martin grabbed a kitchen knife and chased the man, threatening him and holding the knife against his stomach before the man managed to barricade himself in the laundry.

Martin banged on the door and demanded the man come out and “beg for mercy”.

Martin then told the man he owed him $500 for wasting his time.

“(This) smacks of a loss of temper and a lack of anger management,” Judge Byrne said.

The court heard the victim was upset and humiliated.

Martin has been in custody since July of 2020.

In September 2020 he was sentenced for drug trafficking matters but was unable to apply for parole due to the outstanding offences before the court.

Martin had acknowledged he had a problem with drugs and alcohol and had completed some courses and began rehabilitation while in custody, the court heard.

He pleaded guilty on Tuesday to extortion and burglary with violence while armed – was in dwelling with intent to commit indictable offence.

Judge Byrne sentenced Martin to two years on the burglary offence and six months on the extortion offence to be served concurrently with each other and cumulative on the his Supreme Court sentence from 2020.

He ordered that Martin be eligible for immediate parole and convictions were recorded.
