Brisbane westside best pizza: readers choose Facebook poll fave

One half of this “odd couple’’ of westside dining has topped our reader poll as our best pizza joint.

Pizzeria Violetta in Kenmore has been named the westside’s best pizza in our reader Facebook poll.

We asked our Facebook followers to nominate the westside’s best pizza joint and the verdict was clear — Renata Roberts’ Pizzeria Violetta.

Unpretentious on the outside, and seating only about 30 seats, it is usually as busy as a Boxing Day appliance sale.

When we asked a staff member why our readers chose it from plenty of stiff competition, the answer was simple: “We Italian.’’

Indeed, if you spot a non-Italian voice among the staff, it will be Roberts on her dash between Violetta and her Asian restaurant just next door, Sichuan Bang Bang.

She slips from Cantonese to Tuscan in seconds and her personal food tastes are just as eclectic, ranging from osso bucco to Middle Eastern.

“My dad has always been an inspiration to me,’’ Roberts told Newsltd a few years back.

“I was also lucky enough to land jobs in Australia, Britain, the US, Canada, France, Hong Kong and China with inspiring, offbeat, out-of the-box thinkers who allowed me an enormous amount of freedom, as well as teaching me their own individual styles.

“Paul Mathis (Melbourne) and Michelle Garnaut (China) have been my greatest influences.’’

Roberts, who opened Sichuan Bang Bang in 2012 after living in China for five years, and later opened Pizzeria Violetta, has replicated the odd-couple dining concept in Paddington (which is now closed) and Wilston.

On the menu are traditional Bianche (white) and Rosse (red) pizzas, a must try entree of Stuzzichini (chef’s selection of delectable Italian nibbles served on a board), Insalata and Nonna’s rosemary and garlic bread.

Practically everything on the drinks list hails from Italy.
