A Brisbane family are facing a grim Christmas with their one-year-old son fighting for his life in the Queensland Children’s Hospital after contracting liver cancer.

Doctors broke the tragic news to Ainsley Sherwin and Jake McCanne that their beloved toddler, Townes McCanne, had stage 4 hepatoblastoma and needed to undergo gruelling chemotherapy.

The diagnosis has turned their lives upside down with the couple now unable to work and forced to spend Christmas by Townes’ side, away from family and friends.

one of the few bright spots was the support of their loved ones, including Ms Sherwin’s best friend Melinda Bond.

“They know the road ahead is scary for him (Townes) and he has no idea what is happening to him,” she said.

“They try to remain pillars of strength for their baby boy.

“It’s a very scary thing. It’s terrifying for them as they look for hope on what feels like a roller coaster ride.

“As we all know, when life hands you difficult cards there are certain things that don’t stop — regular bills, mortgage payments, accommodation while away from home, additional expenses Townes needs.

“We would love nothing more than to be able to support them through this emotionally, physically and financially so they can focus on the only thing that matters — being together for Townes and supporting them through his treatment over the next six to nine months.”

Ms Bond has set up a GoFundMe page to help the struggling family, which has already raised $46,685.

“I want to cater for their financial burden as a friend I want to do something,” she said.

“Townes is so gentle, so caring and he loves his dog.

“He often comes to our girls days out and we refer to him as one of the girls because he loves picnics, beach days and he’s just one of our friends.

“He is shy but cheeky and loves nothing more than a big cuddle with mum.’’
