PERMANENT heritage protection has been granted to 139 century-old properties in Brisbane.

Council city planning committee chairman Julian Simmonds said they were among 147 originally found on an old sewerage map.

Cr Simmonds said the number had been whittled down after extensive research from council officers.

“The officers got building cards, aerial photography, old subdivision plans, historical building records. Then we moved to protect them,” he said.

Until now, the properties have been protected under a Temporary Local Planning Instrument while an amendment was prepared for the Brisbane City Plan.

The State Government approved the amendment to include the properties in the pre-1911 overlay in October.

Opposition city planning spokesman Jared Cassidy again called for an audit to find all of the city’s pre-1911 homes.

“The only reason we have to have these packages come through is because council has failed in this place,” he said.

Cr Simmonds said when Labor was in administration they operated entirely off an “honour system” for owners to disclose if their properties were pre-1911.
