HOONS would have their tyres destroyed under a proposed Brisbane City Council trial of an anti-hooning surface spray.
Infrastructure chairwoman Cr Amanda Cooper announced on Tuesday the council wanted to trial an anti-hooning seal treatment at two sites.
“Council is proposing to trial some anti-hooning, it’s basically a surface to place on locations where we do have hooning,” she said.
“It actually damages their tyres (but) it only damages your tyres if you’re speeding.”
She said the council was “particularly” looking for industrial sites.
“In industrial precincts they’re sitting there and spinning wheels on surfaces, they’re doing really destructive things,” she said.
“And because there’s no-one there it’s hard to actually deal with it. Police want us to do something and this is an opportunity to trial something.”
She said after it decided on sites, the council would work to set a date.
Opposition infrastructure spokesman Steve Griffiths said he welcomed the trial dependant upon information obtained from a briefing from the council administration.
“I am interested in knowing more about the proposal particularly safety issues and the impact on regular vehicle users,” he said.
Hooning and speeding are enforced by the Queensland Police Service and Council urges residents who witness any kind of hooning behaviour to report it immediately to Police.
