AFTER half a century of entertaining fans, providing a social hub for the community and training elite players, Moorooka Bowls Club has closed its doors.

The ladies held their last meeting on Monday and the last, mixed mens and ladies game was played on Saturday after the executive resolved not to continue.

“We’re now under administration. The club is closed for trading,’’ general manager Gary Cosier said.

“Directors did not want to take the chance of violating trading rules, which I think was the right decision.

“We have hardly any money in the bank — if we did have any we would have continued to trade.’’

Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants has been appointed administrators and will decide what is to become of the club’s assets and if it can resume trading or if other uses could be found for the site.

Mr Cosier said council was keen for some form of bowls, even if only social, to continue at the venue, which hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games bowling.

The club’s financial woes, due to a drop in gaming revenue, were revealed last month but it had hoped at that time to find a solution involving partnerships with other groups such as futsal.

Councillor Steve Griffiths (Moorooka) said while the closure was not a surprise, the speed at which it had happened was unexpected.

He understood why the club had taken the action, but hoped the site could still be used for community purposes.

“I think it will be a big loss for the community,’’ he said.

“I’m calling for the site to remain council-owned and do not support any development of units, as the LNP tried to do at Mowbray Park bowls club in East Brisbane.’’
